OUR PROJECTS

Neighborhood Playground

Within a year of its formation, The Foundation completed its first project: a playground in Mitchell’s neighborhood. While smaller than Mitchell’s Landing in scope and size, the neighborhood playground served as an opportunity for The Foundation to collaborate with GameTime. The neighborhood park was completed on time and under budget.  This was Mitchell's gift to his friends and neighbors.

Mitchell's 5K For Inclusive Play

The Foundation hosted its inaugural “Mitchell’s 5K for Inclusive Play” in October 2019.  Two hundred  fifty people participated in the run and approximately twenty volunteers assisted with the race. Mitchell’s 5K for Inclusive Play raised forty-one thousand dollars from sponsorships and participation fees. This goes directly towards building Mitchell’s Landing.  A special thank you to Audi North Park for their Captain level sponsorship.  Mitchell’s 5K for Inclusive Play has temporarily been suspended due to the pandemic but we are looking forward to gathering again to celebrate Mitchell & Inclusive Play in 2021.

Community Pandemic Support

At the beginning of the pandemic, The Foundation initiated a sewn mask drive that involved thousands of volunteers sewing homemade masks that were donated to our frontline workers. Over 13,000 masks were sewn and donated to 13 area hospitals and dozens of nonprofits to help relieve the PPE shortage until more supplies arrived.

The Foundation continues to support our community by donating cloth masks to community members in need. Over 12,000 masks have been professionally produced and donated to San Antonio families. We are here to help our community and know we will get through this together!

H-E-B Mask Fundraiser

“At H-E-B, our top priority is taking care of Texans. We’re proud to partner with our local nonprofits, like the Mitchell Chang Foundation, who are working tirelessly to find solutions to keep Texans safe while investing in our communities in need.” --Julie Bedingfield, H-E-B Public Affairs Manager.

By producing face coverings for the public, the Foundation was able to provide an income to local underemployed seamstresses during the initial part of the pandemic, whose talents would normally be utilized making wedding, Quinceanera, and Fiesta dresses. All proceeds from the masks fundraiser initiative go towards the building of Mitchell’s Landing at Classen-Steubing Ranch Park.  The Mitchell Chang Foundation would like to express profound gratitude to H-E-B for being part of The Good Story.

Project Warmies

In the wake of a neighboring community’s tragedy, The Foundation partnered with Warmies USA, Uvalde businesses, and Trellis Counseling & Co to raise funds for thousands of Warmies to help directly impacted children and sibilings.  These stuffed plush toys are weighted and can be warmed, providing a comforting feeling.  The Chang family discovered Warmies with their own son when he after Mitchell’s death.
